CIHP maintains a portfolio of both current and landmark projects, primarily within a delivery principle around the cardinal ethics of commitment, responsiveness, outreach, impact and sustainability. Looking at our years of experience, we have uniquely and expertly executed eight (8) projects with a certain robustness that prioritizes the needs of the intended beneficiaries. Our clients have benefited hugely from solutions branded in the CIHP philosophy of addressing public health challenges with innovativeness. This reflects well today, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and security landscape in Nigeria. In promoting health outcomes, our projects range from implementing integrated high quality, comprehensive family-focused HIV care and treatment, infectious disease integration such as Tuberculosis and Cervical Cancer, Immunization, Reproductive health including Family Planning, Gender Equity and Health Systems Strengthening.

Against All Odds: From Knowledge to Practice.

The LEOPOD study was a grant-enabled implementation science pilot research funded by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation through the Grand Challenges Exploration (GCE) platform using the positive deviance approach in low uptake settings of four (4) Local Government Areas in two northern Nigerian.

Using user research, it identified enablers of fully vaccinating children in low-uptake settings and iteratively refining these through participatory learning and action approaches to develop best messaging to drive positive behavior change among non-compliant caregivers.

Amidst the COVID-19 pandemic and in close collaboration with the Government of Niger and Gombe states, CIHP innovatively adapted and implemented approaches that sought to address the challenge of low vaccination coverage rates over a 2-year period.

The LEOPOD project was based on Human-Centered (HCD) Design using the community Participatory Learning and Action (PLA) approach as a vehicle to deliver key messages on immunization leveraging the positive deviants (caregivers who fully vaccinated their children in the same settings) as conveyors to the target population.

The target population were caregivers of non-fully immunized children (CNFICs) being mentored by caregivers of fully immunized children (CFICs), operationally known as positive deviants in the four (4) Local Government Areas (LGA) and twenty (20) wards of the two (2) states. A total of four hundred (400) CNFICs and forty (40) CFICs were targeted over the project implementation period.

The project was successful despite prevailing security and pandemic challenges and substantially contributed to increasing demand and uptake of vaccination services.

As an output, there was increased knowledge on vaccination among beneficiaries in these communities.

The project revealed evidence that adopting the Positive Deviance approach in immunization can help improve uptake of vaccination services and can be further scaled up for improved vaccination coverage. The project experience reinforced that improving quality Maternal Neonatal and Child Health (MNCH) services can be simple and cost-effective and impactful. All documents and tools developed by the project can serve as useful resources for the Government of Niger and Gombe states as well as Nigeria for improving vaccination status
